Why Did This Story Appear Here, and Why Now?

Over at NPR, reporter Emily Feng reports on the concerns that Zelensky's crackdown on media outlets and political opponents in the Ukraine are raising concerns

The subject matter of this story are not at all surprising.  They have been widely reported, at least in foreign news sources, for months. (Generally relegated to page 23)

The fact that this has appeared on a major US media outlet is a bit of a surprise.

Given the state of news reporting at National Public Radio, it is extremely unlikely that this story would have been broadcast without the support of elements of the US state security apparatus.

The question raised by this story is why folks at the various three letter organizations putting this out?

What is their goal?

My completely inexpert guess would be that someone at Langley, or Crystal City, or Foggy Bottom, or Fort Meade thinks that Zelenskyy might be going off the reservation, and so they are attempting to create leverage over him and his administration

You really should read the Economist. I read this 3 months ago, and it was not buried. (it may actually have been on page 23, but it was referred to on the covers.)

Your faith in US security services power is humbling. I generally think they can't find their ass with both hands and a flash light.

I noted that the story had hit the foreign press.

Also, note that I did not suggest that the US state security apparatus would succeed, just that it looks like they are going for a dry.
