I Have One Comment About the Bricks and Minifigs Thing

Do not enter into a franchise agreement without consulting a lawyer. Don't attempts to make changes to any deal without consulting a lawyer.

The whole lawyer thing more generally applies to running a business.

Basically, listen to Mike Monteiro.

He said this 15 years ago.

I will post no more on this subject, even though I will continue to follow it, because it holds a perverse fascination for me.

Living the Meme

So, I was driving to the gym with Sharon,* and she discussed her appointment with her new rheumatologist today.

She is dealing with fibromyalgia.

She mentioned that the doctor did a Lupus test, which she has been tested for before, and as on previous occasions, she tested negative this time.

So, I said, "It's not Lupus, it's never Lupus."

She gave me a profoundly confused look, and replied that she had already said that.

I asked if she understood the meme, and she shook her head, and I said, "House," and suddenly there was memetic recognition in her eyes.

It made my day.

*Love of my life, light of the cosmos, she who must be obeyed, my wife.

Donald Trump is the sane looking one. (WTF?)

The Apartheid Era Emerald Heir Pedo Guy™ spoke at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Not a good look, but it was made even worse by him jumping around like a chihuahua on meth.

People memed the sh%$ out of this.

What can I say about this but, somewhere in America there is a village looking for their idiot who has wandered off.

Down into the Ocean’s ‘Twilight Zone’ with Boaty McBoatface

—BBC

Yeah, I know, "Boaty McBoatface," is so last decade, and I still think that they should have named the boat that, and not just the remotely piloted submersible.

Still, it's nice that Boaty is doing science:

Battling choppy waves and high winds, three engineers pulled ashore a yellow submarine in Scotland this week.

With sheets of water pouring from its body, the UK’s most famous robot - Boaty McBoatface - was winched up after 55 days at sea.

“It’s a bit slimy, and ocean smells have seeped in. There’s a few things growing on it,” says Rob Templeton, now dismantling the 3.6m robot in Leverburgh, on the Isle of Harris.

Boaty has completed a more-than-2,000km scientific odyssey from Iceland that could change what we know about the pace of climate change.

It was hunting for marine snow - “poo, basically” in the words of one researcher. This refers to tiny particles that sink to the ocean floor, storing huge amounts of carbon.

………

The public originally picked the name Boaty McBoatface for a polar ship in 2016. That didn't happen, but instead the name was quietly given to a fleet of six identical robots at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton.

They said that they would name the next research based on the public vote, and then they ignored the voice of the public, and named the boat RRS Sir David Attenborough.

No offense to Sir Attenborough, but Boaty was robbed.

For the Love of God, Do Not Google This

An app used for student teacher communications, Seesaw, was hacked, and and users were treated to pictures of Goatse. (For the love of God, if you do not know what Goatse is, Do Not Google It!!!)

This is not a surprise, Ed Tech is notoriously insecure, and it could have been worse, it could have been a hack into people's passwords and bank logins.  (OK, maybe that's not worse.  Let me repeat this, for the love of God, if you do not know what Goatse is, Do Not Google It!!!)

It should be noted that this is software that we are trusting out children to, and it's getting hacked by people who are using it to post decades old shock internet memes instead of actually hurting people. (For the love of God, if you do not know what Goatse is, Do Not Google It!!!)

There needs to be some regulation to prevent our tax money to go to half baked software:

[Update: Seesaw told Ars that "less than 0.5 percent of Seesaw users were affected. Seesaw blocked the attack swiftly to prevent the message from being distributed widely." Although it "can't discuss the specifics of additional steps" taken to enhance security so far, some of the "additional mitigation steps to prevent an attack from achieving this scale in the future" include "refinements to our rate limiting, alerting, blocking, content detection, and login systems."]

Original story: A popular parent-teacher messaging app called Seesaw was hacked this week, resulting in families across the US receiving a Bit.ly link displaying one of the most widely shared shock images to ever befoul the Internet.

Vice posted a blurred screenshot of the text message that some parents received, confirming that the inappropriate image shared through Seesaw was Goatse, an explicit closeup image of (For the love of God, if you do not know what Goatse is, Do Not Google It!!!). Vice noted that over the years, the image has mostly been scrubbed from the Internet. However, for parents preparing to tuck in their first graders this week, its sudden resurfacing revived its original shock value from the Internet’s earliest days.

In the screenshot, one parent’s response was just a stunned “Um ???”

Seesaw is used by 10 million teachers in the US, and so far, the company has declined to specify how many accounts were impacted, NBC News reported Wednesday. NBC and Vice reporting confirmed that the issue was widespread, though. Reports showed that the inappropriate image was sent to families in school districts in Illinois, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota, Michigan, and South Dakota. Some schools were so concerned that they updated their websites with pop-up windows and alerts to notify parents, urging them to avoid using the app and instead email teachers until the issue could be resolved.

Let me finish by noting that for the love of God, if you do not know what Goatse is, Do Not Google It!!!

This cannot be stressed strongly enough. That which is seen cannot be unseen.

I Am Irrationally Stoked about This

James Sie is reprising his role in Avatar, the Last Airbender in Netflix's new live action version.

Why am I so happy about this? Because this is no ordinary character.

It's this guy:

Yes, James Sie will be reprising his role as the world's most devoted cabbage merchant:

Today, our friends over Avatar News have confirmed that voice-actor James Sie will return to play the live-action version of The Cabbage Merchant from the original Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series. We at Knight Edge Media speculated in March that he could appear in the Netflix series based on his secret trip to Vancouver during filming. As well as star Gordon Cormier mentioned on Instagram, it was nice meeting each other.

I can't stop smiling about this.

For the Love of God, Do Not Google “Goatse”

It appears that a disgruntled game developer has added "Goatse" to a Half Life 2 game mod.

If you know what "Goatse" is, you have my condolences, if you don't, you do not want to know.  That which is unseen cannot be unseen.

I will not be posting the image, (that image is NOT Goatse) and I will be expunging and descriptions from the report below:

One of the reasons why Half-Life 2 is one of the most endearing games of all time is that it is goddamn Half-Life 2, another one is all the glorious fan content it gave birth to. No game deserves more thanks for bringing Half-Life 2 to the memestream than Garry's Mod,  an awesome open sandbox that allows players to use all models from Valve properties and create their own Source engine games. Trolls seem to have argued that Garry's Mod is too good, in fact, and so they've decided to fill it up with booby traps that are sure to traumatize anyone playing the game. Yeah, remember Goatse? We're sorry for reminding those who do, and we're even more sorry for the readers who don't know of it and are inevitably going to open google to search for something that will change their lives forever (for the worse). Goatse is a relatively ancient meme of great evil from a time when the Internet was an absolute free for all. It's a picture of ………

Linux McLinuxface

For the 30th anniversary of the release of Linux, it's foundation is soliciting donations for a commemorative T-shirt.

I don't know who will select the winner, but I want a Linux McLinuxface T-shirt.*

If anyone has a design that might involve this, while incorporating elements, "Centered around the 30th Anniversary of Linux," please submit it to me.

If anyone wants to send me a logo idea, I'll post it here.

*It's a riff on "Boaty McBoatface". That name was the overwhelming favorite for naming a UK research ship when a poll was placed online.

Your Monolith Update

The "whacko, my parents are first cousins, X-Files wannabe, black helicopter, tinfoil hat wearing, stupid, dim-witted, thinks pro wrestling is real," has weighed in on this whole monolith thing.

I suppose that it was inevitable that the Christo-Fascist right would decide that we were being too nice to aliens.

No, I don't mean foreigners, I mean that they are bigoted against, "With her pink antenna and her polka dot skin And the 24 dimples on her chinny chin chin, And the hydrogen sulfide of her hair," people.

They tore down the metal menhir, and erected a wooden cross.

I guess we should be grateful that they did not set the cross alight:

The new California monolith was torn down overnight by a group of right-wing young men who livestreamed their vandalism in a grainy video posted on the blockchain streaming site DLive.

In the video, a group of three men are seen pushing the statue over and chanting "America First" and "Christ is King." The men, one of whom was wearing a "Make America Great Again" headband, called part of the monolith's construction "gay" then replaced it monolith with a wooden cross. It is a decidedly bleak turn in the ongoing monolith saga that has generally been a delightful distraction for a world wracked by a pandemic.

“Christ is king in this country. We don’t want illegal aliens from Mexico or outer space,” a man in the video says. “So let’s tear this bitch down.”

Seriously, this monolith has had the shortest life cycle of any meme ever.

A Most Fabulous Meme

Fabulous!!!
The right-wing terrorists gang known as the "Proud Boys" are being mercilessly memed by LGBTQ people all over the internet.

This is f%#$ing beautiful, and even an official Canadian military Twitter account joined in:
If you search for "Proud Boys" on Twitter, you won't get what you're expecting, and you will absolutely be delighted.

After Donald Trump's reference to the extremist group at the first presidential debate, people have taken over the #ProudBoys hashtag with photos of gay men celebrating their lives and their love.

The goal of the movement is to take back the hashtag from the Proud Boys, a far-right men's organization with a history of violence. Founded by Gavin McInnes, the group describes itself as "western chauvinists," and the FBI considers the group to be an extremist organization with ties to white supremacy.

When asked to condemn white supremacists during the first presidential debate, Trump told the Proud Boys to "stand back and stand by." The statement appears to have galvanized the group and bolstered their following.

Given the group's penchant for a certain brand of white masculinity, the move to use the tag with images of gay men is not just a reclamation, but a cheeky provocation.
The exact source of this meme is unclear, but it may have started with a George Takei tweet.

Oh, My!!!!!!
