Started a New Job Today

At Thales DSI.

As is my custom, I will not be providing any details, though I may comment on something gets coverage in the mainstream media, and probably not even then.

I will note that the intake orientation was quite amusing in a good way.  Their security guy was very funny, as in standup comic funny, all while communicating what is required in a clear and concise way.

Best orientation that I have ever been to.

Would have told you earlier, but I did not want to jinx it.

Bottled Cider Today

About 4½ liters.  A bit sugar and champagne yeast was added to make it sparkling.

It's a bit sour, likely from it sitting on top of the dead yeast for too long. I procrastinated on bottling.

It should improve in the bottle, and perhaps become a bit more sherry like, in the next few months.

Deep Thought

The worst part of being bald is not the lack of hair, it's the feeling of snowflakes landing on my scalp.

It's snowing in Maryland right now.

Yes, I know, I could wear a hat, but I hate hats.

The Joys of a Cleaver

A few years back, I got a cheap meat cleaver at Target.

I really like it.

I use it a lot, not just for things like breaking up a turkey carcass.

Just tonight, I chopped up come cabbage with it, it was an amazing goodatthat, and then hand washed it immediately.

It has a lot more uses that I had originally thought, even if one does not consider it's obvious application, threatening people who intrude in my kitchen.

FWIW, I have never threatened anyone with my cleaver, though I have joked about the possibility.

Had a Frank Drebin Refrigerator Moment Today

You know, Frank Drebin from The Naked Gun, the scene in his apartment.

I had a freezer avalanche about 2 weeks ago.

I thought that I had gotten everything back in, but it appears that I missed a fish head. (Asian market, we had them fillet it, and kept the bones for a fish chowder)

Not good.  Not good at all.

It does explain why the cats were hanging around in the kitchen ……… For the first week anyway.

Something to Confirm with My Computer Programmer Reader(s)

I was doing some programming/database work today, relatively simple stuff, basically a not very procedural report generator and cleaning up a database.

When I was done, I realized that I do not feel like myself when I have done this.

This is distinct from engineering problems, where, even if it is percolating through my head in the background for days, I still feel like me.

It takes about 2 hours before I feel like me again.

Anyone else have this experience.

Just Desserts

In response to a Utah law requiring ID to access erotic websites, Pornhub has started blocking all Utah IP addresses.

Needless to say, many people in Utah (most popular pr0n searchis  "Mormon") are probably cheesed off about this:

Since Monday, Pornhub has begun blocking access for all Utah visitors, taking a strong stance against the state's recently passed age-verification law. In a video statement that now appears on Pornhub's homepage when Utah users attempt to access the adult site, Pornhub spokesperson Sharita Bell said the law was not a "real solution."

"As you may know, your elected officials have required us to verify your age before granting you access to our website," Bell said in the video. "While safety and compliance are at the forefront of our mission, giving your ID card every time you want to visit an adult platform is not the most effective solution for protecting our users—and in fact, will put children and your privacy at risk."

In its statement, Pornhub warned that "without proper enforcement," Utah's law would put children and privacy at risk by driving Pornhub users to platforms that choose not to comply with the law—including pirate sites possibly hosting illegal content.

"As we've seen in other states, this just drives traffic to sites with far fewer safety measures in place," Bell said. "Very few sites are able to compare to the robust trust and safety measures we currently have in place."

Until Utah can enforce the law across all platforms, Pornhub has warned that access will be restricted. Other MindGeek sites like Brazzers, YouPorn, and Redtube have also blocked access in Utah, Axios reported. To remedy the situation, the adult sites urge Utah users to contact their representatives and request that the state update its laws to a "real solution."

………

According to Pornhub, Utah's law mandating age verification differs from Louisiana's law in at least one meaningful way. In Louisiana, the state government created a digital wallet that Pornhub could access to securely verify state IDs. Because Utah has no such technology, Axios reported, Pornhub said it had no choice but to make "the difficult decision to completely disable access to our website" in Utah.

Full disclosure, the top search term in Maryland for 2022 was ASMR, because ……… I have no f%$#ing clue.

More of This

I'm a fan of the Classic American Civil Liberties Union.  You know, the one that defend ill sorts of truly horrible people, the Nazis Marching in Skokie, Illinois, opposing the internment of Japanese during WWII, the Scopes trial, etc., all of which were deeply unpopular.

These days, it seems that they have moved away their constitution absolutism, kind of the New ACLU, in the same manner of the New Coke, which disappoints me.

That being said, IO am heartened to learn that the ACLU still has some of its old chops, because they just defended a high school Satan club in Pennsylvania.

I am doubly amused that this occurred in Hellertown, Pennsylvania.

A school district in Pennsylvania must allow students to convene an After School Satan Club, a federal judge ruled on Monday.

“In a victory for free speech and religious freedom, a federal court has ruled that the Saucon Valley School District
[Hellerton, PA] must allow the After School Satan Club to meet in district facilities,” the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announced.

In a Monday filing, issued in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and shared by the ACLU, a judge found that “here, although The Satanic Temple, Inc.’s objectors may challenge the sanctity of this controversially named organization, the sanctity of the First Amendment’s protections must prevail.”

The school district must allow the After School Satan Club, which is sponsored by The Satanic Temple, to meet during the school year on three previously agreed-upon dates, but it won’t have to distribute permission slips for the club for students to take home, according to the filing.

The national ACLU, the ACLU of Pennsylvania and Dechert LLP filed the suit against the school district on behalf of The Satanic Temple in March, arguing the district violated the First Amendment by prohibiting the club from meeting in the district’s facilities.

I consider this to be the feel good story of the day.

Hoping for an Alien Abduction Right Now

Yes, this story is real, and I no longer want to be on this planet.

Also, writers for The Onion are seriously considering retirement after this.

Kanye West is returning to social media to share an update on his feelings toward Jewish people.

The rapper and fashion mogul, who now goes by Ye, shared a post on Instagram Friday (March 24) claiming that actor Jonah Hill’s performance in 21 Jump Street helped change his views about antisemitism.

“Watching Jonah Hill in 21 Jump street made me like Jewish people again,” Ye wrote alongside a poster for the 2012 comedy, which also starred Channing Tatum. “No one should take anger against one or two individuals and transform that into hatred towards millions of innocent people.”

The rapper added, “No Christian can be labeled antisemite knowing Jesus is Jew. Thank you Jonah Hill I love you.”

As Anna Russel would say, "I'm not making this up, you know."

It's Gone, MacReady

Roll Tape!

One of the things that gives me pleasure is to invoke, obscure, and not so obscure, movie lines when I get the chance.

Today, we were shopping for ingredients for from-scratch spaghetti sauce.

One of the ingredients that we needed was Oregano, so

Sharon* sent me to the spice aisle to get some, but there was none there.  None of the regular stuff, none of the organic stuff, nada.

Apparently, it had all been taken by a ravening band of pasta chefs.

So I went back to Sharon*, and I said, "It's gone, MacReady," and she said, "No oregano at all," and I said, "It's GONE!"

Having the opportunity to quote from John Carpenter's classic SF/Horror movie The Thing made my f$#ing day.

It all ended well, because they had some fresh Oregano in produce, so it's all good.

*Love of my life, light of the cosmos, she who must be obeyed, my wife.

That's the 2nd Largest Keyboard I've Ever Seen

One thing I do know,

This is his theme song

So, YouTube personality Glarses has decided to make himself a giant keyboard.

He really needs to do a Photoshop with people dressed as characters the 1960s Batman TV series.

Sometimes, bigger is better. And sometimes, bigger is just... massive. That's the word that comes to mind when looking at and pricing the latest DIY mechanical keyboard from YouTuber Glarses that's as long and costly as he is tall.

As you might imagine, mechanical keyboards with buttons so big you could comfortably use more than one finger to press one are rather rare. Budget peripheral-maker Redragon has one that you can actually buy that is 1.9 feet long, 7.95 inches deep, and 2.33 inches tall. Google has also played with lengthy keyboards for fun, with Google Japan's Gboard Stick Version prototype measuring 5.25 feet long. And Razer, the inspiration for Glarses' build, has shown off a gargantuan tenkeyless (TKL) keyboard at CES with functioning RGB switches.

Despite all that chassis, though, none of those jumbo boards managed to include a traditional numpad. Glarses' giant keyboard, on the other hand, was made with the mammoth number-cruncher in mind.

As detailed in the video spotted by sites like Review Geek and Dexerto, Glarses' custom keyboard included 3D-printed case parts assembled together with friends, plus giant, scaled PCB-and-3D-printed keycaps.

This costs about $14K.

What a waste.  For that amount of money, Glarses could have produced hundreds of cat videos.

Not sure how one would touch type on this.

I Am Not a Notorious Serial Killer

I'm the one on the right

For the second time, someone has noted the similarity between my 1980 passport picture and the mug shot for Ed Kemper, a notorious serial killer, spiced up with a dash of necrophilia, dismemberment, and matricide. (You may not want to click the link)

I do not see it in any but the most trivial areas, glasses, part side, and mustache.

The first time that someone said that this picture looked like Ed Kemper, it was an ex of Natalie, I put it down to the nature of human perception.

Now, some random person on Twitter has noted the resemblance too.

I am a bit creeped out.

Oh My F%$#ing FSM, It's Real

It appears that the Juneau, Alaska International Airport has a problem with hikers on its Emergency Vehicle Access Road (EVAR) trying to feed and touch the coyotes.

So they made one of the most epically memorable signs ever to remind people that wild animals are best left to their own devices.

In this case, those devices probably come from Acme Corporation:

Scott Rinkenberger installed a sign near the airport looking to both keep people safe and to make them laugh.

Now, the Juneau International Airport is getting calls every day asking about the sign.

“I’ve kind of created a little bit of a monster,” Rinkenberger, the airport superintendent, said in an interview Wednesday.

The sign warns people about coyotes in the area of the Emergency Vehicle Access Road (EVAR), which is also a popular hiking and nature viewing area. While the sign tells people not to get too close to coyotes and not to feed them, it also gives a few not-so-serious attributes of coyotes: carrying a box marked “ACME,” being in possession of a catapult or dropping an anvil from a hot air balloon, for example.

The state legislature should declare Mr. Rinkenberger, "Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico."
