One of the downsides of an insurgency is that should the occupied nation be the victor, the casualties are enormous.
In the case of Iraq, over a million, in the case of Vietnam, almost 2 million, and similar numbers for both Afghanistan conflicts.
If you look at the population of the Ukraine, you are looking at millions of deaths.
The foreign policy establishment, AKA "The Blob" does not care, because they do not care about the people, they just want to hand the "other guys" a loss.
It's pretty contemptible, and then there is Hillary Clinton:
"Remember, the Russians invaded Afghanistan back in 1980," Hillary Clinton says. "It didn't end well for the Russians...but the fact is, that a very motivated, and then funded, and armed insurgency basically drove the Russians out of Afghanistan." pic.twitter.com/iirtXI4vz4

Yes, as Ms. Clinton states, "There were other unintended consequences."
Some of the responses are prize:
I didn't think it possible for a tweet to age poorly before it ever even existed, but you managed to pull off the impossible, MSNBC. pic.twitter.com/ySihIAmtnv

Can't wait for the articles about the motivated freedom fighters. pic.twitter.com/Lv99iQo0AK

To quote someone not named Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord, who is frequently assigned cynical quotes that he did not make, "They have learned nothing, and forgotten nothing."
It really amazing how people who are universally viewed as very intelligent in the US foreign policy apparatus can be so profoundly and reliably dumb.
