Another Moment of Geek.
In case you are wondering how a Wankel engine works, here is an animated GIF.
One of the things that might note is that this engine does not need valves, but you will also note that the combustion are is rather flat, and so has a high surface area, which makes for high thermal losses, and hence lower efficiency.
