At Exercises Southern Cross and Pitch Black in Australia the USAF was only able to deploy ½ of the F-35s that they planned, and those jets were delayed by a week.
Once more we have a, "It was a viciously sharp slice of mango, wasn't it, sir," moment for the Pentagon.
The U.S. Air Force’s latest fighter deployment to Australia has revealed an uncomfortable reality: If it wants to get into the fight quickly, it needs support from allies.
The service spent months this year gearing up for a nearly monthlong deployment of 12 Lockheed Martin F-35As from Alaska to Australia to support Exercises Southern Cross and Pitch Black. In the end, only six aircraft arrived and were more than a week behind schedule.
This deployment was planned over a year in advance, and still, it fell apart.
