Last year, after a resounding series of electoral victories, the proposed liberal constitution lost decisively.
This was from letting the inmates run the asylum, it had 499 articles,(!) and threw in the kitchen sink of left-wing ideas, along with extensive carve outs for indiginous rights, and lost by 61.9% to 38.1%.
Well, they just had another plebiscite for a new constitution, this one profoundly right wing, and it lost by over 10%.
It banned abortion, created a carve out for the Catholic Church, which was an obsequious ally of the Pinochet regime, required "Respect for national symbols," enshrined the private sector in healthcare and other social services, locked in the current privatized and larcenous retirement system, and made discrimination against the LGBTQ a civil right.
I do not expect another referendum for years, and so the Pinochet constitution, with it's disastrous pseudo-free market bent, will solder on.
The right-wing clowns who wrote this version were in a win-win situation, if they won, they won, and if they lost, they still had the Pinochet monstrosity.
One hopes that the left has learned from this lesson, and when they attempt to reform corrupt Pinochet constitution, they don't go with another 499 article (!) monstrosity.
