Because, of course First, understand that I am somewhat conflicted over all of this.
This was a major f%$# up, and vast majority of the casualties, and the vast majority of the casualties, will be non-combatant civilians.
It's clear that this has been a complete f%$#-up on both sides.
I think that Hamas did not expect to be so successful, they wanted some ink and some hostages, and Netanyahu has been mismanaging pretty much everything except for maintaining power for years.
One thing that I find bizarrely refreshing is that Israeli media is investigating and holding Netanyahu to task. (See also here, here, and here.)
The most surprising thing that I have learned this far is that US intelligence sources have stated that Iran was completely surprised by the Hamas attacks.
While this news does not surprise me. The first rule of keeping secrets is not to spread it around, and warning Tehran would be pretty close to shouting their plans from the rooftops.
That being said that someone at Langley or Ft. Meade, or Foggy Bottom, or Joint Base Anacostia–Bolling basically said that the Iranians were not specifically and directly behind this is unusual. (I am sure that John Bolton is weeping over this one.)
The wisest analysis seen so far is this from Yale historian Timothy Snyder:
I won’t claim to know what Hamas expects from Israel, nor what Israel should do. That would be a matter for people with the languages and expertise to read and analyze the documents and the data. My point is that it is always worth asking, in such situations, whether you are following the terrorist’s script. If what you want to do is what your enemy wants you to do, someone is mistaken. It might be your enemy. But it also might be you.
BTW, I do know who is the worst person in the United States with regard this, and ain't those stupid kids at Harvard who wrote a letter saying it was all Israel's fault.
They are just a bunch of stupid kids.
The worst person in the US, more so than Congressional Republicans (I cannot believe that I just f%$#ing said that), is hedge fund bankster Bill Ackman, who is organizing a blacklist among business leaders to keep students who are in these groups from getting hired.
It turns out that the usual suspects are also doxxing these students, up to, and including driving a truck with their names and faces painted on the side.
What a revolting group of people, and I am not talking about the Harvard idiots.
