Thanks, Merrill^h^h ck

So it looks like the investigation of Matt Gaetz for sex-trafficking is being shut down, because Merrick Garland is useless.

At least we have decorum?

The Justice Department has decided not to bring charges against Representative Matt Gaetz, Republican of Florida, after a lengthy sex-trafficking investigation that imperiled one of former President Donald J. Trump’s most ambitious and hard-charging allies in Congress.

In recent months, investigators have signaled they were not likely to pursue criminal charges against Mr. Gaetz after concluding they could not make a strong enough case in court, people familiar with the matter said. Department officials told his legal team about the decision early Wednesday.

………

In late 2020, federal prosecutors began examining whether Mr. Gaetz, 40, broke federal sex-trafficking laws, focusing on his relationships with women recruited online for sex, and whether he had sex with a 17-year-old girl.

The investigation, which revealed embarrassing details of Mr. Gaetz’s private life, appears to have weighed heavily on a wisecracking politician who has cultivated a brash, carefree and bellicose public image. In the last days of the Trump administration, Mr. Gaetz is said to have quietly and unsuccessfully appealed to the White House for a broad pre-emptive pardon that might have encompassed the sex-trafficking investigation.

Might have?

………

The decision not to prosecute Mr. Gaetz came two months after his close associate, Joel Greenberg, was sentenced to 11 years in prison on charges including sex trafficking after he had cooperated with prosecutors by discussing his interactions with the congressman and the women.

Seriously, relying on the "Norms Fairy" when there are no norms are a recipe for a fascist coup against our government, though thankfully, this has not happened yet ……… Oh wait, it has happened.

I get that the norm in Washington, DC is to cut the politically connected some slack, but the exact opposite should happen.

Our elected officials need to be held to a higher standard.

Who is Merrill?

Are you saying that you saying an indictment should have happened, even if the lawyers do not think there is enough evidence, on the basis of political position?

D'oh, I mean Merrick.

Yes, I believe that Garland is being excessively solicitous of criminals in office.

If Matt Gaetz had been Matt Jones, not only would I have been charged, but I would likely be held with bail.

I assume you mean Matt Saroff.

What evidence do you have that it was a winnable case?
