More of This

Look in the Box
Following a pattern of death threats, releasing confidential information, and irregularities with the widows' and orphans' funds, the FBI has raided the offices of the New York Sergeant's Benevolent Association (Cop Union) as well as the home of its (now former) President:

The incendiary and confrontational president of one of New York City’s main police unions resigned on Tuesday evening, hours after federal investigators raided the union’s Manhattan headquarters and his Long Island home.

In a statement, the board of the union, the Sergeants Benevolent Association, said that its president, Edward D. Mullins, was “apparently the target of the federal investigation.”

The union — which describes itself as the fifth-largest police union in the United States — added that “given the severity of this matter and the uncertainty of its outcome,” its executive board had asked Mr. Mullins to resign and that he had complied.

Federal investigators earlier on Tuesday had executed search warrants at the Sergeants Benevolent Association’s offices in Lower Manhattan and Mr. Mullins’s home in Port Washington, on Long Island.

The search was connected to an investigation by the F.B.I. and the public corruption unit in the U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan, two people with knowledge of the matter said.

I'm not sure what this is about, but there have been reports of for at least a year of financial irregularities in the allocation of member benefits, so that could be a part of what is going on.

I would also note the oddity that we catch a glimpse of in the arms of an agent participating in the raid in the tweet above.

You can only see a bit of it, but it is clearly a body armor, which these days is a part of the uniform for cops everywhere, but the NYPD flak vests are ALWAYS blue, not olive drab, and these are olive drab.

Green body armor is more of a militia thing than it is a cop thing, and given Mullins history of virulent bigotry, this might be a part of the investigation.

I'm not sure what they are investigating, but Mullins, but they have pulled his gun and badge, and he has filed for retirement,

Given that it's the FBI, and the NYPD was already looking at disciplinary proceedings over his incendiary behavior, I figure that he's either that he embezzled from the union, or he took bribes.

I'm looking forward to watching future developments.
