If You Will Be a Target of the Committee, You Should Not Be a Member of the Committee

In response to house Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy's nominations of people who were complicit in the January 6 insurrection to sit on the select committee to investigate the January 6 insurrection, Nancy Pelosi has rejected Jim Jordan and Jim banks.

It is fully within her purview to do so, though I am surprised that she actually did:

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Wednesday rejected two of the Republican picks — Reps. Jim Jordan (Ohio) and Jim Banks (Ind.) — for the Jan. 6 select committee.

Both GOP lawmakers are staunch allies of former President Trump, and both had voted in January against certifying President Biden's election victory.

In a statement, Pelosi said Democrats in her caucus had raised specific objections to Jordan and Banks "and the impact their appointments may have on the integrity of the investigation."

“With respect for the integrity of the investigation, with an insistence on the truth and with concern about statements made and actions taken by these Members, I must reject the recommendations of Representatives Banks and Jordan to the Select Committee," she said.

Not surprised that McCarthy did this, he has sold what remains of his soul to Donald Trump.

......

Jordan and Banks were part of a group of five GOP lawmakers nominated by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) to serve on the 13-member select committee. But the language of the resolution gave Pelosi veto power over the Republican selections.

Pelosi said she will accept the other three GOP selections: Reps. Rodney Davis (Ill.), Kelly Armstrong (N.D.) and Troy Nehls (Texas). They would join the eight lawmakers she had previously appointed, including Reps. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), the panel's chairman, and GOP Rep. Liz Cheney (Wyo.), Congress's most prominent Republican critic of Trump.

There was a proposal for a "bipartisan" committee, but Republicans shot that down.

I won't say that Karma is a bitch, but I will say that Karma has made Congressional Republicans THEIR bitch though.

McCarthy has pulled all of his nominations as a result, so instead of 6 Republicans including Liz Cheney and 7 Democrats, there will be just Liz and the Dems.

Meanwhile, the most overrated comedy duo in Washington, DC, Greg Sargent and Paul Waldman make an obvious observation, that the more that Republicans refuse to participate in the investigation, the better the investigation will be

This has been the case since (at least) the Iran Contra hearings, where the Republicans did their best to obstruct the investigation, and when they couldn't they did their best to turn the grants of immunity into a weapon to prevent the witness from testifying against Ronald Reagan.

If Nancy Pelosi wants to add 5 more Republicans, I would suggest Adam Kinzinger, Fred Upton, David Valadao, and one of the other 5 House Republicans who voted to impeach this January.
