Re teachers: In Seattle at least, and in most of the Western Part of this state, starting salaries for teachers are 47K going to over 100K in 15 years.
As for being poorly treated, they certainly don't get necessary oversight and coaching to help them improve. This may be why so many in Seattle are truly poor teachers.
A deeper reason people don't want to be teachers is that -- as with nurses -- the pool of people to provide teachers -- young intelligent women with no other choice -- no longer exists. They have other options.
Plus, and I think this is key, people remember their teachers.
