McConnel has been through enough government shutdowns to know that when they occur, it's always Republicans who get the blame, so he green-lighted a short term extension of the US debt ceiling.
I really don't understand how thought that it would work this time:
The US Senate has approved a deal to extend the government’s borrowing authority into December. The compromise between Republican and Democratic leaders would temporarily avert an unprecedented federal default that experts say would have devastated the economy.
With a 50-48 vote, senators agreed to increase the borrowing limit by $480bn, sufficient to prevent the US government from defaulting by keeping debt payments up until 3 December.
It's interesting, because the Democrats have been doing everything but saying, "Don't throw me in that briar patch," to McConnell, and ke keeps doing this.
I have to figure that this has nothing to do at all with the upcoming general elections in 2022, but instead has to do with the 2022 primary elections. Appeasing the nutjob wing of the Republican party is driving this.
Well, as Napoleon said, "Never stop a man from stepping on his own dick." (This may not be a 100% accurate translation.)
